When you think of the holidays, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For me, it's family traditions and delicious food. Growing up with my grandparents close by meant that I was taught how to make some of the old family favorites, like this delicious divinity candy. As a young girl, being in charge of watching the egg whites was so much fun. I should have known then that I was bound to be some type of foodie.

Spending hours in the kitchen with my mom and grandmother making all different types of cookies and candies during the holidays is one of my fondest memories. Stories are shared and memories are made when family gets together in the kitchen. And you also get a lot of great stuff to eat.
Part of the fun making holiday treats is working with spices you usually don't work with the rest of the year. From Cinnamon to Nutmeg, these flavors are what make these treats stand out.
For this recipe, I was able to change one of my family favorites by adding some of the spices that Simply Organic sent to me. Using Ginger, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Ground Cloves, I was able to add a nice fall spice to light and airy treats.

Without any disrespect to any of my dear ancestors who used the original recipe for this divinity, I have to say that adding these spices has made it even better.
I honestly wasn't sure how exactly it was going to turn out, but I'm so glad I took the chance and added the spices in. Combined with the flavor from the walnuts, these little sugary treats are perfect for any holiday event.
When putting this post together, I knew I wanted to encourage some of you to REALLY TRY this recipe. Even if you have never made candy before, don't let that scare you away.
Pulling this recipe out the other day, I became a little nervous myself. I hadn't made it in quite awhile and I hadn't used the candy thermometer either. But, making this divinity really isn't that hard.
Keep the candy at a low boil and just wait patiently as the temperature rises on the thermometer and you'll be good to go.Using Good Spices Makes A Difference
I was thrilled to get the chance to work with Simply Organics and Vitacost on this post because I am already a huge fan of their spices.
The more and more I cook, I have realized that using good, flavorful ingredients is important. I also can make my family delicious treats knowing that I'm using organic ingredients too.
Have you ever made Divinity candy before? If you have, do you add any special spices to it to make them taste even better?
Leave me a comment and let me know what you think.... and if you haven't tried making it before.. give this recipe a try.. it's really not that hard to make!

Such a great idea to mix egg whites with all the winter spices! I have done the classical ones so many times but haven't thought about ginger and cinnamon mixture.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of these being called divinity candy, but I can attest to how good they are! Love the spices used in these.

ReplyDeleteYes. Very addictive.. so much sugar, but soo much yummyness!
ReplyDeleteGigi... how would you make them sugar free? I was wondering that myself .. seeing I like to do healthier versions.. I wasn't sure what I could use that would hold up. It's basically egg whites and sugar.
ReplyDeleteThanks Christina. It's funny, I'm hearing that quite a few people don't know what these are.
